Packing for Performance
Whether you are packing for a performance across town or around the world, as a dancer, you need to be prepared. Have you ever gotten to a gig to find out you’ve forgotten a critical cosmetic, an important prop or an essential costume piece? Here are a few tips for keeping preparing for your next gig.
Have a dedicated performance bag.
It really doesn’t matter if it’s a simple tote or an upscale suit case, make sure that our bag is large enough to hold your costume and supplies, and sturdy enough to hold up to the rigors of transportation. A bag with multiple pockets to hold the wide variety of objects necessary for our work will help keep your organized.
Pack performance essentials into the bag and leave them there.
If you always perform with zills, having a spare set in the bag at all times will prevent you from going on without them. For performers who use veils, packing a neutral color like black, white or a metallic will ensure you never go on without. If you perform frequently, you may also want to have backup shoes, jewelry, a cosmetic touch-up kit.
Music, Music, Music.
Although we live in a digital age, there is still the occasional venue that still requires taped music. Having duplicate backups of your dance sets on both CD and tape will allow you to be completely flexible and appear totally professional. In addition, you may want to keep a selection of your sets on hand so you can pick the mood and theme that matches the venue, your state of mind, and time constraints.
Your bag will probably seem pretty full by this point, with a costume and all the accessories, makeup and music, but you may want to add a few more items to help make performances go more smoothly.
First-Aid kit.
Pre-packed first-aid kit is available at any pharmacy. When selecting a kit, make sure that it includes supplies to fit your needs. Be sure to personalize your kit with the pain reliever of your choice and extra adhesive bandages. If you have essential medication, you may want to keep a small supply in your kit at all times.
Promotional Materials.
Most dancers who perform carry around business cards, postcards, flyers and other promotional materials. Keep them together, up-to-date and available to share with potential clients, event planners and other dancers.
Other items you may want to keep at hand in your bag include, power-bars or snacks, water, towel, wet-wipes for hands and fabric wipes for cleaning your costume. Over time, you will find the exact set of items you need in your bag for many seamless and smooth performances to come.
